Mindy Kaling: Beyond ‘The Office’
Be the first to commentYou probably know Mindy Kaling best for her work on the NBC sitcom “The Office,” where she wears three hats as writer, director, and actor. Now, welcome to a whole other side of Mindy – the “B” sides, if you will – in Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns). Most of the hilarious essays herein center around Kaling’s family, making it on your own, and the not-so-glamorous moments of everyday life. Her essays about childhood are funny and personable, as Kaling was – surprisingly – a shy and sensitive kid. With humor in tow, she discusses her own struggle with weight and how being slightly chubby made her a target for teasing. And she also delves into how her parents’ hard work and love have had a great influence on her perception and expectations.
Kaling’s experiences as a writer are witty and truthful. She explains that her perfectly decorated home office remains unused and she prefers to write in bed cradling her laptop. Writing sessions can have a tendency to turn into any TV show marathon, and goofing around with friends can suddenly spark the creative process. Refreshingly, there are not any chapters questioning the role of women in comedy, or what a feminist comedienne looks like. Sure, one gets the sense Kaling could easily defend or define those positions, but she prefers to let her talent do the talking.
In addition to her quite funny (and quite followed) Twitter feed, is also known for her blog “Things I’ve Bought That I Love,” which showcases her opinions on fashion and pop culture. In her book, Kaling expresses how she is one of the few people in Hollywood who can go to an awards show and be recognized, but also go to Nordstrom Rack and shop sales without invasive paparazzi. This position is ideal for her truthful observations and uninhibited comments. For example, upon receiving her first gift bag at an awards show, her sophisticated hopes are thwarted when she receives travel-size toothpaste for “women’s teeth.” However, Kaling has made extensive, hilarious lists of levels of fame she would gladly enjoy – one of which includes hoards of teenage girls dressing like her.
One of the reasons this book is so enjoyable is because the author is charmingly accessible and admirable. This is a great read if you are looking for a smart, honest, and funny memoir.
